Ballad of Leon Trotsky
Let me sing a balladabout Trotsky the Exile1:
The one murdered at his house,
and the one who was brutally wrapped.
He was expelled from his country,
And he wandered around many countries.
While combatting oppression,
he was always under threat.
He left for France and Turkey,
seeking asylum and rest...
But his most jealous enemy followed him everywhere.
And the Mexican government,
with a sacred gesture,
Gave the Exile2 his asylum
with a proper protection.
With a police at his house
Always being at watch
Because an assault was coming
To disturb his grand intentions.
An Aragonese foreigner,
addicted to axes3,
wanted to get the Exile's trust,
so he could go to Coyuacán4.
Stalin and the assassin -
a natural partnership!
And their master crime
has reached their destination.
And when he gained his trust,
With a swift and strong blow,
With an ice axe he had with him
He had fulfilled his orders.
And after a quick moment,
the Exile was murdered.
And thus Destiny
has hit it's score.
And to the Green Cross 5
Trotsky was taken.
Where the doctors
pretended trying to save his life.
And the Exile's fighting body,
Descended to the raw earth.
And his body will be lovingly
protected without any spite.
- 1. Lev Davidovich Trotsky was a Russian revolutionary and Old Guard Bolshevik, who was one of the main contenders for power in the Soviet Union, together with Old Guards Zinoviev and Kamenev and newcomer Stalin.
After Stalin took power in the Soviet Union, Trotsky was exiled and moved accross the world: from Norway to Turkey, then France and he ended up in Mexico, where he was, in 1940, assassinated on orders of Stalin and carried out by the NKVD
He founded Trotskyism: a far-left communist ideology that promotes permanent revolution. - 2. I used the word 'Exile' to describe Trotsky in this translation, even when the singer calls him the 'leader'
- 3. This refers to NKVD agent Ramón Mercader, who was the assassin of Trotsky. He was born in Barcelona, so singer refers to him as Aragonese.
'Addicted to axes' may sound weird, but I couldn't find a proper translation for 'horganza', so I used the word axe, as that was the weapon Mercader killed Trotsky with - 4. This was Trotsky's place of residence.
- 5. Cruz Verde is the national healthcare service of Mexico in the modern times ( I'm not sure about this, it just looks like this ), idk if it was that back in the day. If you know, write in the comments.
